MEDIA RELEASE: We Have the Power to Protect

Last Updated: 4/21/2025

National Infant Immunization Week is April 21-28, 2025. This yearly observance highlights the importance of protecting children two years and younger from vaccine-preventable diseases.

This year’s National Infant Immunization Week emphasizes the fact that we have the power to protect the littlest members of our community from potentially deadly diseases, like whooping cough and measles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children stay on track with their routine vaccinations.

Benefits of Vaccinating Children on Time:
Ideal Timing – Following the CDC’s schedule protects your child against 14 serious diseases at the right time.
-Prevents Complications – Delaying vaccinations leaves your child vulnerable to serious disease when they are most likely to experience complications.
-Early Protection – It’s best to vaccinate your child before they are exposed to harmful diseases.
-Long-Term Protection – Vaccines provide long-term immunity without having to experience a serious illness.

Reduce Spread of Illnesses – Children who are not vaccinated, or are behind on vaccinations, can spread diseases to others who may not be able to be vaccinated.

Louise Dorsey, Public Health Nurse at Tioga County Public Health, strongly encourages parents and caregivers to vaccinate their children following the CDC’s childhood vaccine schedule. “With recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, like measles and whooping cough, it is in the best interest of the child to ensure they receive all their vaccinations.”

If you have questions about childhood vaccines, please talk to your child’s primary care provider or call Tioga County Public Health 607-687-8600.
